Role Overview
We are seeking a database-focused engineer to strengthen the software development team. This role will support the data layer behind Hines web and AI applications, with an emphasis on database object development, query optimization, API development, and reporting structures. The person in this role will partner with web application developers who may focus more heavily on the application layer. The role is hands-on in database engineering; application development experience is necessary but is not the primary requirement.
Key Responsibilities
Relational database development
•Design, develop, enhance, and support SQL Server database objects, including stored procedures, views, common table expressions, scalar functions, table-valued functions, and indexes.
•Build and maintain reporting tables and other fit-for-purpose data structures used by applications, analytics, AI, and operational reporting.
Performance and reliability
•Review query execution plans and execution paths to identify bottlenecks and recommend practical improvements.
•Optimize queries and database objects through appropriate indexing, query rewrites, statistics awareness, and other database tuning techniques.
•Proactively monitor and troubleshoot data and performance issues across application, API, and database boundaries; explain findings clearly and recommend durable fixes.
•Consider data accuracy, concurrency, error handling, maintainability, and operational impact when designing database changes.
Team partnership
•Work with software developers, analysts, and stakeholders to clarify requirements, estimate database work, and coordinate implementation.
•Provide database expertise during design and code reviews, deployments, and production troubleshooting.
•Document database behavior and important design decisions so the team can maintain and extend its systems.
Required Experience and Skills
Core qualifications
Five or more years of professional experience:
•Developing and supporting relational databases in production environments.
•Strong SQL skills and substantial hands-on experience with SQL Server and/or PostgreSQL.
•Experience designing and maintaining stored procedures, views, functions, and other database objects.
•Practical experience analyzing execution plans, optimizing queries, and designing or improving indexes.
•Sound understanding of relational data modeling, normalization, keys, constraints, and transaction concepts.
•Experience creating or supporting data extracts and other structures consumed by applications and analytics.
•Ability to trace data flow through application code, APIs, database objects, and downstream reporting or warehouse processes.
•Experience building or maintaining APIs and backend services, or contributing to web application development.
•Clear communication and collaboration skills, including the ability to explain technical tradeoffs to software developers and business partners.
Nice to Have
•Experience with Python, C#, JavaScript, TypeScript, or React-based applications.
•Exposure to ETL/ELT tooling, data warehouse implementation, Power BI, Tableau, SSRS, or similar reporting platforms.
•Familiarity with deploying DACPAC packages.
•Experience with Azure services, Azure DevOps, CI/CD pipelines and automated testing.
•Familiarity with NoSQL databases, Master Data Management, AI integrations, or real estate data.
