About the Role
Grade Level (for internal use): 10 Network Engineer
Global Network Services is seeking a Network Engineer with a strong interest in network automation to help build and operate S&P Global's multi-cloud network platform. This role is central to the drive to replace manual network provisioning with repeatable, code-driven delivery across AWS, Azure and GCP. You will write and extend automation, implement cloud network changes, and support the platform in production - working alongside senior engineers who will guide you on design decisions and review your work. This role suits an engineer who enjoys both writing code and understanding the network it configures, and who wants to grow their cloud networking depth in a large and varied environment.
Job Responsibilities
Network Automation and Infrastructure-as-Code
•Write, test and maintain Terraform modules to provision cloud network services across AWS, Azure and GCP, working to patterns set by the senior engineering team.
•Build scripts and tooling in Python and Ansible to remove repetitive manual network tasks and improve consistency.
•Extend existing automation to cover new network services and use cases, and help keep shared modules current as cloud platforms evolve.
•Contribute to CI/CD pipelines for network change, including automated validation and pre-deployment testing.
•Help develop automated configuration and compliance checks so deviations from approved standards are detected early.
•Follow good engineering practice in shared repositories - version control, peer review, readable modular code and clear documentation.
•Identify manual tasks in your own work that could be automated, and propose them to the team.
Cloud and Hybrid Networking
•Implement and support cloud network solutions across AWS, Azure and GCP based on agreed designs and requirements.
•Configure and maintain core cloud networking components including VPCs and VNets, subnets, Transit Gateway attachments, VPC peering, route tables, security groups, load balancers and DNS.
•Support hybrid connectivity across AWS Direct Connect, Azure ExpressRoute and site-to-site VPN.
•Respond to network requests and troubleshoot network failures to diagnose, isolate and resolve issues, escalating to senior engineers where appropriate.
•Apply routing fundamentals including BGP and OSPF when supporting connectivity between cloud and on-premises environments.
•Prepare and execute approved network changes within agreed maintenance windows, including documented back-out steps.
Collaboration and Continuous Improvement
•Work with application, security and infrastructure colleagues to deliver network changes that meet enterprise standards and compliance requirements.
•Produce and maintain low-level documentation, automation runbooks and standard operating procedures.
•Provide support to operations engineers on network issues, and participate in on-call rotation and out-of-hours change windows as required.
•Identify and act upon opportunities for continuous improvement to reduce risk, optimise efficiency and capacity, and improve standards.
•Build knowledge of cloud networking and network automation, and share what you learn with the team.
Basic Required Qualifications
•Proven experience (5+ years) in enterprise networking, including hands-on experience working in a cloud environment.
•Practical hands-on experience with network automation, including Terraform and Python, and familiarity with version control using Git.
•Hands-on cloud networking experience in at least one of AWS, Azure or GCP, with working knowledge of a second.
•Working experience with cloud networking services such as VPC, subnets, security groups, route tables, Transit Gateway, Route 53 and ELBs, or their Azure and GCP equivalents.
•Good knowledge of networking standards, protocols and technologies, including routing (BGP, OSPF), switching, VPNs, DNS and load balancing.
•Ability to read network configuration as code and understand the network impact of a change before deploying it.
•Good troubleshooting and analytical skills, with the judgement to know when to escalate.
•Willingness to learn, take direction from senior engineers and act on code review feedback.
•Ability to work effectively as part of a cross-functional team.
•Good written and verbal communication skills.
•Ability to manage multiple priorities and commitments.
•Self-motivated, able to progress tasks independently once direction is agreed.
Additional Preferred Qualifications
•Exposure to enterprise firewalls, particularly Fortinet and Palo Alto Networks, in cloud or data-centre deployments.
•Exposure to network segmentation and micro-segmentation approaches in cloud or hybrid environments.
•GCP networking experience, including VPC design, Cloud Router, Shared VPC and Private Service Connect.
•Familiarity with Cloud Native NaaS (Network as a Service) platforms such as Alkira, Prosimo or Aviatrix.
•Experience with Cisco, Arista and F5 load balancers or similar network equipment.
•Exposure to Ansible, automated network testing, or network observability platforms such as Selector AI or ThousandEyes.
•Relevant certifications such as AWS Solutions Architect Associate or Advanced Networking Specialty, Microsoft Azure Network Engineer Associate, Google Professional Cloud Network Engineer, CCNA or CCNP, or HashiCorp Terraform Associate.
•Experience working in a regulated financial services environment with formal change and audit requirements.
