LookRoom

Backend engineer in AI systems

In short

Senior Backend Engineer role at LookRoom AI, an early-stage startup building an AI-powered personal assistant for wardrobe and appearance decisions. The job covers backend architecture connecting user context, digital wardrobe, LLMs/multimodal AI and personalization logic, plus integrations with external services. Requires strong backend fundamentals (Python/Node.js, APIs, SQL/NoSQL, cloud, Docker, CI/CD, security) and comfort with AI dev tools; during the Pre-MVP stage the role is equity-based and hybrid in Yerevan, later transitioning to a paid full-time on-site position.

About the Role
At LookRoom AI, we're building a fully AI-powered Personal Assistant designed around a simple principle: Be As You Are. LookRoom learns the individual - their wardrobe, schedule, preferences, habits, lifestyle, daily context and plans, and uses that understanding to progressively automate everyday appearance-related decisions. We don't want AI to simply generate more recommendations. We want it to understand the user well enough to reduce the number of decisions they need to make at all. The result: less decision fatigue, less daily friction, and most importantly, time back to our users. We're now looking for a Senior Backend Engineer - AI Systems & Platform to help build the technical foundation and intelligence layer behind that experience.
Responsibilities
•Work closely with the founding, product and frontend teams to design and build the backend architecture that connects: User → Personal Context → Digital Wardrobe → AI Intelligence → Decision → Action → Feedback → Deeper Personalization
•Build the infrastructure that enables LookRoom to develop a continuously evolving understanding of each user
•Help build the backend behind LookRoom's intelligent digital wardrobe, transforming a collection of clothing items into structured information that AI can understand and reason over
•Build the application layer connecting LookRoom with LLMs, multimodal AI and other intelligence services
•Help build systems capable of combining information such as Wardrobe, Preferences, Weather, Calendar, Occasion, Destination, History, User Context to produce highly personalized decisions and recommendations
•Design backend mechanisms that allow LookRoom to become better as users interact with it
•As the product evolves, help build integrations with external systems such as Fashion retailers, Product catalogs, E-commerce platforms, Weather services, Calendar services, Third-party AI services, Other lifestyle and contextual data sources
Requirements
•Backend application architecture
•Python, Express/Node.js/TypeScript, or comparable backend technologies
•REST and/or GraphQL APIs
•SQL and NoSQL databases
•Data modeling and database architecture
•Authentication and authorization
•Cloud infrastructure - AWS, GCP or Azure
•Docker/containerized environments
•Caching and asynchronous processing
•Queues, background jobs and event-driven architecture
•CI/CD
•Testing and observability
•API security
•Performance and scalability
•Highly comfortable working with tools such as Cursor, Claude Code, GitHub Copilot, or comparable AI development environments
•Understanding of good practices around: Personal/user data protection, Authentication and authorization, Secure API design, Encryption, Secrets management, Data access controls, Logging and monitoring, Third-party API security, Privacy-conscious system architecture
•Can turn an ambiguous product requirement into a working technical solution
•Know the difference between architecture required for an MVP and unnecessary overengineering
•Build quickly without creating avoidable technical debt
•Take ownership without waiting for detailed instructions
Nice to Have
•Experience working with some of the following is highly valuable: LLM APIs, Multimodal AI, Structured outputs, Function/tool calling, AI agents and workflows, Embeddings, Vector databases / semantic retrieval, RAG architectures, Recommendation systems, AI evaluation and monitoring, Model routing, AI memory/context systems
•Direct experience with fashion AI, computer vision, 3D visualization, recommendation engines or personalization systems would be a significant advantage
•Experience designing systems with US and international privacy requirements in mind is an advantage
Conditions
During our Pre-MVP stage, this is an equity-based cooperation opportunity, hybrid work model. PRE-MVP: Equity + Hybrid. Following MVP and as LookRoom moves toward market entry and scaling, the position is planned to transition into a Salary + Equity + Full-Time + On-Site role.
