Data engineer

In short

Senior Data Engineer role building a fully open-source data platform (dlt, dbt, Airflow/Dagster, Apache Iceberg/Delta Lake/DuckLake, Trino/DuckDB/PostgreSQL, Apache Superset) for a digitally sovereign Europe initiative. Requires 5+ years of data engineering experience, strong Python/SQL skills, experience building layered lakehouses and data governance (dbt tests, OpenMetadata/DataHub), plus fluent Dutch and English. Hybrid role based in Amsterdam, acting as technical point of contact for customers.

About the role
Put your expertise to work for a digitally sovereign Europe! As a Senior (Sovereign) Data Engineer, you will work on a data platform built entirely from open-source components. You will retrieve data from source systems, model and transform it, and deliver the datasets, dashboards and data products our customers actually use to make decisions. The platform will remain European and open source; your task is to ensure it delivers value.
Responsibilities
•Build batch ingestion from source systems using dlt or comparable declarative tooling, with data as open Parquet on object storage.
•Model and transform data with dbt and SQL into a layered lakehouse on Apache Iceberg, Delta Lake or DuckLake tables, orchestrated with Airflow or Dagster.
•Query and expose data with Trino, DuckDB or PostgreSQL, and deliver the consumption layer through Apache Superset dashboards, notebooks and data APIs.
•Build data quality and governance directly into the pipeline — with dbt tests, data contracts and lineage in OpenMetadata or DataHub.
•Be the technical point of contact for the customer and take responsibility for progress, quality and content.
Requirements
•At least 5 years of experience as a data engineer and a completed relevant bachelor's or master's degree.
•Strong knowledge of Python and SQL, with code that colleagues can read and test.
•Demonstrable experience with data products on Free and Open Source data systems, not only on a managed platform.
•Experience with dbt and an open-source orchestrator such as Apache Airflow or Dagster.
•Experience with an open table format on object storage (Apache Iceberg, Delta Lake or DuckLake) and at least one open-source query engine (Trino, Spark or DuckDB).
•Comfortable with PostgreSQL.
•In-depth knowledge of data modeling and a clear opinion on how to build a layered lakehouse.
•Familiarity with Git-based delivery, CI/CD and containers, and an affinity for dashboarding in Apache Superset or similar.
•Excellent command of Dutch and English, spoken and written.
Conditions
•Gross monthly salary between €4,799 and €6,719 (based on 40 hours), excluding 8% holiday allowance and profit sharing.
•Flexible workweek (32, 36 or 40 hours) and the option to work hybrid.
•NS Business Card or mileage allowance.
•Working-from-home and internet allowance, plus a budget for an ergonomic home workspace.
•Personal development budget and access to training, coaching and certifications.
•Tech Talks, MeetUps, in-house Hackathons, team outings, summer festival and end-of-year party.
•And more!
