RELX

Senior Agentic AI Full-Stack Software Engineer (Java & React / Javascript / Angular / Claude Code / Codex)

In short

This is a Senior II Software Engineer role building full-stack capabilities that help scientific researchers submit research for publication, as part of an Agile team at a global information and analytics company (Elsevier/RELX). It requires proficiency in Java, Spring/Spring Boot, JavaScript/TypeScript frameworks (React or Angular), SQL, plus proven experience with agentic coding workflows and AI tools (Copilot, Claude, Codex, Cursor) and cloud/CI-CD tooling (Docker, Kubernetes, AWS, Terraform, GitHub Actions/Jenkins). The role also expects mentoring of junior engineers and real Agile collaboration experience. It is hybrid, based in Oxford, requiring office presence at least once a week.

About the team
Our dynamic Agile Teams deliver the technology that facilitates researchers to publish quality scientific research. As a Software Engineer, you will build capabilities to improve the quality of scientific research.
About the role
As a Senior II Software Engineer, you will build capabilities to support scientific researchers through the process of submitting the research for publication. We are continually evolving our technology in response to researchers' needs and to the ever-changing technical landscape, including the use of AI technologies.
Key responsibilities
As a Software Engineer, you will be responsible for:
•Designing, developing, and deploying applications in a cloud-hosted distributed system to build our next-generation product
•Collaborating with business stakeholders to identify requirements and gather feedback in a fast-moving environment
•Providing input into architectural decisions to ensure stability and performance
•Identifying and implementing enhancements to continually improve our delivery process
•Partnering with cross-functional Agile and DevOps implementation teams
Requirements
We know it, and we're excited about it. AI-assisted and agentic development is reshaping what engineers do day to day. We will allow good engineers to build and evolve their skills into the roles of the future.
You will demonstrate proficiency in the majority of the requirements below, along with the attitudes and behaviours that make a great engineer on our team.
Technical
•Core Engineering Stack: Proficiency in most of our core technologies (Java, Spring / Spring Boot, JavaScript / TypeScript frameworks such as React or Angular, and SQL), with a willingness to learn others. Experience with Python is desirable but not essential.
•Agentic Engineering: Proven experience using agentic coding workflows and modern AI tools (e.g., Copilot, Claude, Codex, Cursor) to plan, build, refactor, and document complex systems. You can discuss the role of judgement in agentic engineering: when to delegate to an agent, how to verify its output, and where human accountability remains.
•AI-Assisted Troubleshooting: Experience using AI tools to analyse metrics and logs across observability platforms (e.g., New Relic, OpenSearch / Kibana, Coralogix).
•Cloud & Delivery: Familiarity with containerised, distributed cloud environments (e.g., Docker, Kubernetes, AWS), Infrastructure as Code (Terraform), and CI/CD pipelines (e.g., GitHub Actions, Jenkins), alongside solid version control (Git).
Growth, leadership & collaboration
•Rapid Learning: A proven track record of learning new skills effectively and rapidly.
•Mentorship & Leadership: Actively mentors and teaches junior engineers, and actively drives discussions to improve working practices and code quality.
•Collaboration: Real-world Agile experience (Scrum/Kanban) and clear communication across disciplines, including product and UX.
How you work
•Ownership & Judgement: Takes responsibility, solves problems, makes decisions, and weighs risks, including when working with AI tools and agents.
•Curiosity & Product Mindset: Stays aware of what's happening in the industry, and takes a genuine interest in the domain and the business.
