Careers that change lives start here
Medtronic is a global leader in healthcare technology with a Mission to alleviate pain, restore health, and extend life. Our 95,000 employees work across more than 150 countries to put patients first — developing innovative medical technologies that improve the lives of 72+ million patients each year.
A Day in the Life
The Peripheral Vascular Health (PVH) operating unit partners with clinicians to treat peripheral arterial and venous disease—helping people return to fuller lives by saving limbs, reducing pain and swelling, and restoring healthy blood flow.
As a Principal R&D Engineer in Galway, Ireland, you will develop and execute multi-disciplinary models to assess design risk and ensure device and system reliability, safety, and performance. You will build fundamental understanding and provide insights for design decisions by building robust performance predictions. This is a very exciting time for this organization as we focus on expanding our product portfolio to treat more patients.
In general, the following responsibilities apply to a Principal R&D Modelling & Simulation Engineer. This includes, but is not limited to the following:
•Collaborate with cross functional team to execute a modelling and simulation strategy for design optimization and reliability evaluation of peripheral vascular devices
•Develop predictive engineering tools, techniques, and approaches to support the product development process
•Execute modelling & simulation studies to assess stress/strain magnitudes and distributions in implant components
•Virtual design and prototyping of new implants, delivery systems, or single-use devices used for peripheral intervention. Using expertise in non-linear finite element software tools to incorporate large deformation, complex multibody contact, dynamic impact, modal analysis and multiaxial cyclic fatigue failure modes
•Interpretation of complex in-vivo loading modes derived from patient imaging and mathematical conversion to Finite Element Analysis boundary conditions. Research into realistic device-anatomy interaction simulations including reconstruction of patient anatomies into meshed FEA models
•Application of CFD or FSI software tools to predict flow conditions related to peripheral vascular interventions
Key Skills & Experience
The Successful Candidate will have:
•Strong technical aptitude with a deep understanding of the finite element method, and its application using commercially available software packages, and a strong understanding of fundamental engineering principles in mechanics and/or CFD and FSI.
•Experience in the application of the principles of fatigue analysis for metals including superelastic and shape memory alloys. Simulation of highly deformed metals, polymers, fabrics, biological tissue and pulsatile flow conditions.
•Demonstrated proactive creation of novel algorithms and scripts to automate post-process finite element output databases.
•Exposure to the development of novel model validation experiments and analogous finite element modelling, and development of material testing protocols to calibrate constitutive models, as well as FEA model validation. Development of hydrodynamic testing protocols (e.g. PIV) to facilitate validation of CFD and/or FSI models.
•The candidate shall be familiar with the application of the principles of ASME VVUQ10, 20 & 40 to drive model credibility. Has prepared detailed modelling and simulation engineering reports to support product design characterization and verification, for example in direct support of new product regulatory submissions.
Qualifications
Must Have - Minimum Requirements:
•Bachelor's degree in Materials Science, Engineering Mechanics, Mechanical Engineering, Physics or related technical discipline.
•Minimum of 7 years of industry experience, or a Master's degree with 5 years of technical experience, or a PhD with 3 years relevant experience.
Nice to Have:
•Significant experience using Abaqus, LS-DYNA or similar FEA software. Extensive experience meshing complex 3D structures. Experience with CAD software.
•Knowledge of engineering mechanics, mechanical design, material processing, fatigue analysis, metallurgy and strength of materials.
•Knowledge and experience with application of technical principles, theories, and design concepts in implantable product design including product, process, and technology development and evaluation.
•Knowledge of risk management analysis including Failure Mode and Effects Analysis (FMEA) and statistical techniques relevant for design and test for reliability.
