Role
The Systems Engineer will be responsible for the integrated design, coordination, and technical support of both electrical and mechanical auxiliary systems associated with hydro-generator and turbine rehabilitation projects. You will act as a technical focal point, ensuring that the electrical instrumentation and mechanical components function as a cohesive system. This role requires close collaboration with cross-functional teams, supply chain, and site personnel to ensure design execution aligns with safety, quality, and contractual requirements.
Key responsibilities / essential functions
Design & Engineering:
•Perform contract analysis, conduct site visits to document existing conditions, and translate findings into detailed design packages.
•Develop and manage the integration of electrical (wiring, instrumentation, protection) and mechanical (piping, HPU, cooling, fire protection) auxiliary systems.
•Prepare design calculations, technical specifications, and Bills of Materials (BOMs).
•Deliver work packages to draftsmen and oversee the production of schematics, P&IDs, wiring diagrams, and layout drawings.
•Conduct multidisciplinary design reviews with internal experts, cross-functional teams, and clients.
Project & Technical Support:
•Provide technical support to the supply chain team for RFQ processes and supplier technical oversight (review/approval of supplier documentation).
•Manage non-conformity reports (NCRs) and supplier deviation requests.
•Collaborate with site teams during erection and commissioning, offering field-based troubleshooting and support.
•Participate in Root Cause Analysis (RCA) and utilize "Feedback of Experience" (FOE) to improve future designs.
Standards & Quality:
•Apply fundamental principles of reliability, safety, and cost-efficiency to all designs.
•Ensure compliance with the Canadian Electrical Code (C22.1), ANSI/NFPA 70, and relevant mechanical/industrial standards.
•Collaborate with project engineering managers to meet strict project milestones.
Qualifications / Requirements
•Education: Bachelor's degree in Electrical or Mechanical Engineering.
•Professional Status: Member of the Ordre des Ingénieurs du Québec (OIQ).
•Experience: Experience in calculation and design of electro-mechanical systems (hydro-electric preferred).
•Technical Proficiencies:
•Electrical: Single-line diagrams, junction boxes, instrumentation selection, MCCs, and control panels.
•Mechanical: Piping and instrumentation diagrams (P&ID), fluid mechanics, cooling systems, HPUs, and lubrication systems.
•Skills: Strong analytical capabilities, leadership, and the ability to simplify complex technical matters for stakeholders.
•Languages: Fluent in written and spoken English and French. The employee will be required to interact fluidly with colleagues in other facilities across and/or outside of Canada, who are generally unable to communicate in French and whose language at work is predominantly English.
•Travel: Ability to travel (domestic/international) for site visits and inspections.
•Authorization: Must have unrestricted Canadian work authorization.
Desired knowledge and/or experience
•Experience in electro-mechanical auxiliaries systems for hydro-electric power plants or a similar field (industry).
•Experience in installation or commissioning of hydro-generators and turbine electrical auxiliaries.
•Knowledge of BOP (Balance of Plant) equipment testing.
•Knowledge of a third language is an asset (Portuguese, Mandarin or Spanish).
