Wise

Software Engineer - Send High Volume

In short

Senior backend engineer role at Wise on the Send High Volume team, focused on building reliable, secure systems for customers sending large international payments. The role covers leading technical design of large projects, owning production systems (observability, on-call, incident response), mentoring engineers, and shaping the product roadmap, using Java/Spring, Kafka and relational databases within a micro-services architecture. It demands strong distributed-systems expertise, product thinking, and experience owning high-impact projects end to end; payments/FX/fintech experience and LLM feature shipping experience are valued.

About Wise
Wise is a global technology company, building the best way to move and manage the world's money. Min fees. Max ease. Full speed. Whether people and businesses are sending money to another country, spending abroad, or making and receiving international payments, Wise is on a mission to make their lives easier and save them money. As part of the team, you will be helping create an entirely new network for the world's money, for everyone, everywhere.
The Role
The Send High Volume team tackles the challenges unique to customers sending large amounts internationally — think relocators moving their life savings, people managing investments abroad, or businesses running a global enterprise. For most of them, sending an amount this big is nerve-wracking. A tiny shift in the exchange rate can cost thousands, higher risk and scrutiny mean slow-downs at every step (navigating daily and monthly limits, proving the legitimacy of funds, waiting on risk clearance from banks on either side, etc.), and possibly a far more severe consequence of missing the payment timelines. They monitor, and worry throughout — Did it arrive? Why is it held? Will the rate hold? When it works, it's magic. When it doesn't, it's one of the most stressful things they'll ever go through.
The mission is to make sending £5M just as effortless as sending £500, matching products to the unique needs of these customers:
•Predictability and simplicity of process: seeing upfront what's needed and how to navigate a transfer this big, instead of hitting surprises mid-way.
•Predictability of price and ETAs: a consistent, reliable forecast, so customers can plan their expenses, budget and timelines with confidence and peace of mind.
•Accessibility and quality of support: having fast, direct access to a representative who specialises in navigating the complexities of their route, and shows the same urgency and care they feel themselves.
You'll be one of the engineers shaping how Wise builds for its highest-value customers. You'll own the technical design and delivery of large, high-stakes projects, and stay accountable for what you build long after launch. Day to day, that looks like:
•Leading the technical design of large projects — breaking ambiguous problems down into milestones the team can deliver, writing and reviewing RFCs, making technical decisions around the solutions built.
•Building the hardest parts yourself — designing reliable, secure, and API-first solutions with clean, well-documented interfaces within the existing micro-services architecture using Java/Spring, Kafka, and relational databases.
•Owning what we run in production — being accountable for the availability, reliability and security of the team's systems. That means setting the bar for observability and testing, being part of the on-call rota, leading incident response and post-mortems, and paying down tech debt before it turns into risk.
•Multiplying the team — mentoring and coaching engineers, onboarding new joiners, spreading knowledge so nobody (including you) is a single point of failure, and interviewing regularly to keep raising the hiring bar.
•Shaping the roadmap — giving strong, product-minded feedback on the roadmap and working closely with product, design, analytics and operations, so the team is always working on the most impactful thing and delivering at a predictable pace.
It's backend-focused and AI-first, but the role spans all of Wise: you'll redefine UX, reshape architecture and fix foundations wherever the biggest problems are.
Requirements
•You're an expert backend engineer with strong distributed-systems fundamentals — you design for the long term, using patterns that are easy to iterate on and scale.
•You can reason clearly about consistency, idempotency and failure modes when real money is on the line.
•You've made a significant contribution to large, impactful projects — you've owned the technical design and deliverables of your part, broken ambiguous work into milestones, and stayed accountable through launch, iteration and the long tail afterwards.
•You think like a product engineer — you can always explain what customer problem you're solving, why it's worth doing now, and what impact you expect.
•You give strong feedback on the product roadmap, and you use data to make decisions, not to justify ones you've already made.
•You make the engineers around you better — you do it through mentoring, thoughtful code review and writing things down.
•You're comfortable challenging other people's ideas and having yours challenged, without ego, and you're happy to interview candidates regularly.
•You own what you ship — observability, security, testing and on-call are part of your definition of done.
•You've taken a leading role in resolving incidents and in making sure they don't happen again.
•You work well across teams and functions — you communicate clearly with product, design, analytics and operations, and you look for ways to keep teams moving in the same direction instead of duplicating work.
•You operate at the frontier of tech — you keep yourself up to date, experiment regularly with new tools, and already use AI as a multiplier for your own productivity.
•Experience in payments, FX, fintech, or another regulated, compliance-heavy domain.
•Frontend or mobile experience — a bonus, not a requirement.
•Experience shipping LLM-backed features to production.
