Lean Technologies

Software Engineer

In short

Senior backend engineer role at Lean Technologies, a Dubai-based fintech building financial infrastructure (Open Banking, payments, billing) across MENA. The role involves owning revenue-critical and compliance-sensitive systems — ledger, billing, payouts, and a strategic integration — end-to-end. Requires strong Java/Spring Boot backend engineering, Kafka, PostgreSQL/Redis, and prior experience in regulated fintech or payments environments. Onsite position in Dubai, full-time.

About the Role
The Lean Store team owns some of Lean's most revenue-critical and compliance-sensitive infrastructure — from payouts and billing to the regulatory ledger underpinning ADGM and SwiftX growth. As a Senior Software Engineer on this squad, you'll take full ownership of core systems, drive delivery on committed integrations, and ensure the reliability of infrastructure that processes millions in transactions. This is a hands-on execution role for an engineer who thrives on owning domains end-to-end.
Lean is the leading financial infrastructure provider in the Middle East. We power some of the region's largest companies with APIs that enable payments, account verification, financial data access, and other critical financial infrastructure. What started as the region's pioneering Open Banking platform and quickly became the de facto leader in account aggregation and payment initiation in the region is now becoming something bigger: a multi-product infrastructure company powering payments, data, and lending across MENA. We've processed billions of dollars in transactions. We're trusted by 350+ clients — from Binance and Careem to Etisalat — and backed by General Catalyst, Sequoia, and Shorooq. Our $67.5M Series B was just the beginning. We're expanding into new markets, opening offices, acquiring businesses, and building capabilities that didn't exist here before.
Responsibilities
•Build and maintain core ledger functionality that underpins Lean's SwiftX compliance use case and regulatory requirements for ADGM scaling
•Own the billing system end-to-end — its reliability, maintenance, and ongoing evolution
•Deliver on the Mal integration, a strategically committed new integration with direct revenue implications
•Cover ongoing payouts infrastructure — incident response, client features, and DC-related work — ensuring SLA adherence on a live revenue stream
•Drive stability, performance, and scalability improvements proactively across the squad's domain
•Give design-level code reviews, contribute to refinement, and write clear technical specifications
Requirements
•Strong backend engineering in Java, Spring Boot, JPA/Hibernate, microservices, and REST APIs
•Production experience with Kafka for event-driven systems
•Data layer proficiency: PostgreSQL and Redis
•Familiarity with build and delivery tooling: Maven, Docker, Jenkins
•Observability mindset: Prometheus and Grafana in production environments
•Experience with AI-assisted engineering tooling (e.g. Claude) in day-to-day work
•Ability to own a domain independently — handle most backlog items without direction, drive design decisions, and contribute to tech specs
•Writes high-quality, secure, fully tested code with solid monitoring and alerting
•Clear communicator — able to explain technical risk to both engineers and leadership
•Reliable on commitments; unblocks the squad and escalates early when needed
•Fintech or payments engineering background
•Experience working within regulated financial environments
•Mentorship experience with junior engineers
While this experience is important, the team is keen to hear from people who believe they have valuable experience to bring to the role, even if not all requirements are met.
Conditions
We're building the financial infrastructure for MENA. Since 2019, we've become the first regulated Open Banking and Open Finance company operating across the UAE and Saudi Arabia. We've processed billions of dollars, connect millions of accounts, and enable companies like Binance, Careem, and Etisalat to build products that were previously impossible in this region. Our recent $67.5M Series B from General Catalyst and Sequoia is fuel for expanding into new markets and launching new products.
We offer competitive salaries, private healthcare, and flexible office hours, and every member of the team holds a meaningful equity stake in the business to ensure long-term alignment.
