Legal Counsel

In short

A nine-month in-house legal role at a life insurer, starting 18 January 2027, with hybrid working in Wellington. The counsel advises across the business on policy interpretation, claims, complaints, marketing compliance, supplier and reinsurance contracts, and helps the legal team adopt AI and legal tech tools. Requires 3+ years PQE, a current NZ practising certificate, and working knowledge of NZ insurance and privacy legislation.

About the role
If you've wondered what in house looks like, this is a good way to find out. It's nine months of broad, hands on legal work, starting Monday 18 January 2027, with hybrid working.
You'll advise across the whole business. One day it's whether a claim falls within the policy wording. The next it's a marketing campaign, a supplier contract, a reinsurance agreement or a complaint heading to the Insurance & Financial Services Ombudsman. You'll be the go to lawyer for your own business units and work with Chubb Group legal teams offshore.
There's a second part to the brief. We want to use AI and legal tech properly, not just talk about it. You'll help pick the right tools, build up our knowledge management system and templates, and show the business how technology can make legal work faster and more accurate. Nine months is enough time to leave a real mark.
What you'll own
•Advising on policy interpretation, claims eligibility and escalated complaints, including IFSO
•Reviewing marketing, sales and distribution for conduct and compliance
•Drafting and negotiating supplier agreements and reinsurance
•Partnering with your business units to understand and manage legal risk
•Running training for the business and helping it get ready for law reform
•Building our knowledge management and putting AI and legal tech to real use
What you'll bring
•3+ years PQE and a current NZ practising certificate
•Working knowledge of the FMC Act, Fair Trading Act, CGA, IPSA and Privacy Act
•Confidence advising senior managers and dealing with external parties
•Sharp analysis and plain English advice people can act on
•Hands on use of legal tech or AI tools, and a drive to use them better
•Availability to start on 18 January 2027 – negotiable
You don't need to meet every requirement to apply. If this role sounds like a strong fit for your experience and the kind of environment where you would do your best work, we'd love to hear from you.

•Group Life, Trauma, Income, Healthcare and Travel Insurance
