Fiserv

Director, Clover Engineering – Merchant Onboarding & Growth

In short

Fiserv is hiring a Director of Clover Engineering to own the technology behind merchant onboarding, activation, and growth, leading globally distributed teams including offshore engineering groups. The role demands 12+ years in software engineering with 5+ years leading engineering managers, deep experience with offshore team leadership, product-led growth, AI-driven SDLC practices, agentic automation, and merchant onboarding/KYC in fintech or payments. This is a C-level, on-site role in Sunnyvale, California, five days a week.

About the Role
Clover is looking for an engineering leader to own the technology behind how merchants discover, onboard, activate, and grow with Clover. You will lead globally distributed teams, including offshore engineering teams, that turn Clover.com and the onboarding platform into a unified, self-service growth engine. The goal is journeys that cut merchant friction, shorten time to first transaction, and are measurable end to end. You will bring a product-led growth mindset and an AI-first approach to how software is built and delivered.
What You'll Do
•Lead and grow global engineering teams. Hire, coach, and develop engineering managers and senior engineers across onshore and offshore locations. Build a high-trust, high-accountability culture with clear ownership and shared standards.
•Run an effective offshore operating model. Define team structure, ownership boundaries, handoffs, on-call coverage, and follow-the-sun practices. Keep quality, velocity, and engagement consistent across sites.
•Partner across locations and time zones. Work with Product, Design, Marketing, Sales, Risk/Underwriting, and Operations stakeholders in multiple regions. Set clear communication rhythms, decision-making norms, and documentation practices that work across time zones.
•Drive AI across the SDLC. Introduce and scale AI-assisted development across the lifecycle: requirements and design, coding, code review, testing, security scanning, release, and incident response. Measure impact on productivity, quality, and cycle time, and set responsible-use guardrails for security, privacy, and IP.
•Introduce agentic automation. Identify and build agent-based workflows that automate engineering work, such as test generation, code migration and refactoring, pull request triage, release notes, defect triage, and operational runbooks. Define human-in-the-loop controls, observability, and governance for these agents.
•Drive product-led growth. Build the PLG foundations: event tracking standards, experimentation and A/B testing, personalization, in-app and contextual messaging, and a customer data layer. Tie them to activation, adoption, and attach rates.
•Own the onboarding experience. Simplify the path from lead and application through underwriting decision, provisioning, activation, and first transaction. Reduce drop-offs, decline rates, and manual intervention.
•Unify merchant journeys. Align merchant archetypes, journeys, and funnels across self-service, sales-assisted, bank, ISO, and partner channels.
•Modernize the digital platform. Evolve Clover.com from a brochure site into a scalable, globally consistent platform. This includes a modular, headless CMS architecture, a reusable component and design system, and strong SEO/AEO foundations.
•Make growth measurable. Establish shared KPIs and end-to-end attribution from discovery through onboarding, activation, and lifetime value.
•Rationalize the stack. Reduce tool overlap, unclear ownership, and handoff friction across experience, orchestration, and services layers.
•Run engineering excellence. Own reliability, security, performance, release quality, and delivery predictability for merchant-facing systems.
Experience You'll Need to Have
•12+ years in software engineering, including 5+ years leading engineering managers or multi-team organizations.
•Proven experience leading offshore or globally distributed engineering teams, including vendor or captive-center models, with strong delivery outcomes.
•Demonstrated ability to work effectively with stakeholders across multiple locations and time zones, with strong asynchronous communication and alignment skills.
•Strong, hands-on experience leveraging AI in the SDLC (for example AI coding assistants, AI-driven testing, and AI-enabled code review) with measurable gains in productivity and quality.
•Experience introducing agentic approaches to automation: designing, piloting, and scaling agent-based workflows with appropriate governance, security, and human oversight.
•Proven experience building or scaling product-led growth capabilities: experimentation platforms, funnel instrumentation, lifecycle messaging, self-serve acquisition, and activation.
•Deep experience with merchant or customer onboarding in fintech, payments, SaaS, or marketplaces. This includes application flows, KYC/KYB, risk and underwriting integrations, and provisioning workflows.
•A strong merchant or customer experience orientation, with a track record of improving conversion, time-to-value, and satisfaction using data.
•Strong technical depth in modern web and API architectures, microservices, cloud platforms, and headless CMS or composable architectures.
•Ability to simplify complex, fragmented ecosystems and drive clear ownership across teams.
•Excellent communication, with the ability to influence executives and partner with Product, Marketing, and Sales leaders.
Experience That Would Be Great to Have
•Experience in payments, POS, or SMB SaaS.
•Familiarity with customer data platforms, personalization or recommendation engines, and SEO/AEO/GEO.
•Experience with global, multi-region digital experiences and design systems.
•Experience building AI-assisted experiences for merchant guidance and onboarding.
•Experience establishing AI governance and responsible-use practices for engineering teams.
