Saab

Configuration Manager

In short

Saab is hiring Configuration Managers for its Gripen fighter aircraft program in Linköping, Sweden, to work within the configuration office managing baseline, change, and product structure processes using the Teamcenter PLM system. The role sits at the intersection of technology, product management, and business governance, ensuring product configurations are documented, traceable, and reproducible throughout the product lifecycle, and involves training staff, running change-decision meetings, and improving CM processes within a ~15-person team. Candidates need a few years of configuration management experience (or willingness to grow into the role), strong structured thinking, good communication in Swedish and English, and are subject to Swedish security clearance requirements that may involve citizenship restrictions.

About the Role
Do you want to make a real difference? Here you contribute to creating safety for people and societies.
We are currently looking for several Configuration Managers with different levels of experience, from those who want to develop within the field to those with several years of experience who want to and can directly take on greater responsibility.
Configuration management, including baseline, change, and product structure management, is an important prerequisite for developing, further developing, and delivering Gripen – today and for many years to come.
Gripen is a complex system of both hardware and software, where thousands of technical solutions, changes, and dependencies together form a clearly defined and controlled product that meets the highest requirements for quality and reliability. With so many constituent parts, it is necessary to plan and control the configurations so that at every step we know exactly what is included in each configuration and what we send into the air, both for test flights and delivery to customers around the world. Succeeding at this requires structure, a holistic perspective, and the ability to get many parts of the development organization to work toward the same goal.
This is where you and your colleagues within the configuration office play a central role, as it is the Configuration Manager who formally assembles the constituent parts into a larger whole in our PLM system, Teamcenter.
Configuration Managers operate at the intersection of technology, product management, and business governance. In this role, and in collaboration with our interfaces, you ensure that we know what our product consists of, that changes introduced are documented, traceable, controlled, and reproducible, and that the correct product information is available throughout the product's entire lifecycle. We should be able to see which configuration was in effect when the product was developed, but also 10 or 30 years later, as well as what has changed and why a change was made throughout the product's lifecycle.
An important part of your work is therefore to ensure that established processes are followed and that routines and infrastructure are in place, so that our products' configurations are continuously updated and correctly documented at decided points in time. Other equally important and natural parts are handling configuration-related questions toward our interfaces and strengthening CM capability within projects and the business.
Some of your main tasks include:
•Supporting an efficient and controlled development of the products.
•Planning, implementing, and driving the configuration work throughout the product's entire lifecycle.
•Planning the build-up and maintenance of product structures in dialogue with the interfaces.
•Managing and following up on change cases and change processes.
•Acting as secretary at decision meetings for product changes.
•Keeping project and program management updated.
•Training and supporting the organization in configuration-related matters.
•Participating in methodology development, aiming to improve and streamline our flows, processes, and ways of working.
•Participating in configuration audits when needed.
Depending on your background, you may also participate in various forums of a more strategic nature and in technical reviews.
We are looking for someone with the will to, in the role of Configuration Manager, keep track of the situation in a trust-based approach. We offer you opportunities to develop in a stimulating environment, where we work in teams and support and learn from each other. The product understanding and broad network of contacts that you as a Configuration Manager will have the opportunity to build within the development organization at Aeronautics will help you move forward in the work.
Despite the challenges that the state of the world presents us with, we value having fun together.
You will belong to the Systems Engineering Management area within the Fighter Aircraft department, the Gripen business unit, and the Aeronautics business area, where we have strategic and operational responsibility for configuration management for all products within the Gripen family. The team you will join consists of approximately 15 people with varied backgrounds in terms of education and experience.
Your Profile
We are looking for someone with a few years of experience in configuration management, but also someone who has a good ability to see the whole picture and understand how decisions made today can affect products, processes, and ways of working in the longer term.
You are curious, driven, and take responsibility. You do not hesitate to ask questions when things are unclear, are motivated by complex issues, have the ability to work in a structured manner and make complex information understandable, and can drive several matters in parallel. You are also comfortable getting others to work according to applicable processes and standards.
Collaboration with configuration colleagues and interfaces is an important part of the role, which is why good communication skills in speech and writing, in Swedish and English, are also important. Equally important, however, is that you also enjoy working independently.
We believe that your interest in technology combined with your personal qualities, as well as the will to develop and contribute to others' development and to turn proposals into concrete improvements, will determine whether you succeed in the role.
A university degree, systems science education, or equivalent knowledge from work life is desirable. Since our products are of a high technical level, broad and general technical competence as well as experience with hardware and/or software is an advantage.
Experience in configuration management, PLM systems, product lifecycle management, and technical development projects is meritorious.
The position requires that you undergo and are approved according to the security regulations in force at the time. For positions where Saab has requirements for security classification placement, this may, where applicable, entail requirements for a certain citizenship.
