Axel Springer

AWS Cloud Platform Engineer

In short

This role builds and evolves AWS-based internal developer platform infrastructure for Axel Springer's product teams, powering high-traffic digital products like welt.de and bild.de as well as internal editorial, subscription and commercial systems. The team works with Terraform, CI/CD pipelines (e.g. Spacelift), and platform engineering practices to drive scalability, reliability, and developer self-service. It demands strong hands-on AWS expertise across compute, storage, networking and security, deep Infrastructure-as-Code experience, and strong ownership in complex environments. Hybrid work in Berlin with 80% office presence.

About the Role
As an AWS Cloud Platform Engineer, you build and evolve the foundation that enables our product teams to move fast, safely, and at scale. Our central application platform is the backbone for both high-traffic digital products like welt.de and bild.de, as well as business-critical internal systems across editorial, subscription, and commercial domains. Your work directly impacts how efficiently teams can develop, deploy, and operate software. You will shape a modern internal developer platform on AWS — focusing on scalability, reliability, and developer experience — while helping drive our journey towards platform engineering excellence. We believe in the future of journalism as a business model and invest in forward-looking technologies. Our five essentials are the values that unite us and our compass in our commitment to freedom.
Responsibilities
•Design, build, and continuously improve our internal developer platform on AWS using Terraform, with a strong focus on scalability, reliability, and developer experience
•Automate infrastructure delivery through CI/CD pipelines (e.g. Spacelift) and expand self-service capabilities for product teams
•Own and evolve core platform components so teams can build, deploy, and operate services more autonomously
•Review pull requests, share knowledge, and help maintain high engineering standards across the platform
•Evaluate and introduce new AWS services, tools, and cloud-native patterns where they add clear value
•Strengthen the platform's security, compliance, and resilience through clear standards, guardrails, and robust platform design
•Work closely with product teams to understand their needs, remove bottlenecks in developer workflows, and translate those needs into scalable platform solutions
Requirements
•Strong hands-on experience operating critical large-scale AWS environments, with broad knowledge of AWS technologies across areas such as compute, storage, networking, backup and recovery, and cloud security best practices
•Deep experience with Infrastructure as Code using Terraform, CI/CD and automation practices, agile software delivery, and Platform Engineering concepts, ideally including the development of internal developer platforms
•A strong sense of end-to-end ownership and the ability to reliably drive topics forward, even in complex environments
•Clear and respectful communication skills, openness to feedback, and a collaborative mindset that supports knowledge sharing and continuous learning
•A systems and product mindset with a strong focus on internal users and their needs
•The ability to challenge existing solutions thoughtfully and make sound engineering trade-offs that balance quality, speed, and maintainability
•Curiosity, forward-looking thinking, and a structured approach to discussions that helps drive continuous improvement
Additional Information
•Personal growth support: trainings, learning lunches, tech conferences, a budget for workshops and more
•Employee offers: discounted public transport ticket or JobRad leasing, bicycle garage with regular bicycle service, childcare facilities or two in-house kindergartens
•30 days vacation plus 10 days work from abroad
•Free lunch in the canteens
•Guidance on the administrative side of relocation and visa processes through a relocation agency
•Collaboration based on 80% office presence and 20% mobile working
•Permanent full- or part-time position in a modern office in the heart of Berlin
