About the Role
MUFG, one of the world's leading financial groups with a rich heritage spanning over 350 years and a global presence in more than 40 countries, is seeking an Assistant Vice President Project Manager for their Data Portfolio. This role sits within the IT Planning, Reporting and Administration department, specifically in the Project Promotion team, offering the opportunity to work at the heart of EMEA and global project delivery. You will be entrusted with planning, directing, and governing multiple projects across both IT and non-IT domains, ensuring rigorous governance, agile risk management, and quality outcomes.
•Join a globally renowned financial institution with a strong legacy and extensive international network, offering exposure to complex data transformation and regulatory projects.
•Engage with diverse teams across departments and mentor junior project managers while contributing to portfolio strategy.
•Benefit from robust governance frameworks, clear reporting structures, and opportunities for professional development.
Responsibilities
•Plan, direct, and govern multiple projects within the Data portfolio, ensuring comprehensive upfront planning, agile risk management strategies, and adherence to rigorous governance standards for quality outcomes.
•Scope each project individually—whether IT or non-IT related—and develop detailed delivery plans that align with organisational objectives and compliance requirements.
•Engage all relevant stakeholders throughout the project lifecycle, influencing business decisions where appropriate to maximise project benefits and foster consensus.
•Establish effective project governance using prescribed frameworks; ensure timely escalation of issues into the Data portfolio committee as needed.
•Create baseline plans for each project including scope, timeline, budget, and outcomes; oversee delivery against these baselines while managing change controls without breaching approved parameters.
•Provide expert change management guidance to resolve conflicts, mitigate risks associated with change, and advise business units on key decisions.
•Structure project plans with meaningful milestones that support regular reporting; deliver transparent updates to all stakeholders ensuring information remains current and accessible.
•Mentor junior project managers by promoting team contribution through regular quality data updates related to ongoing projects.
•Support portfolio/program managers in executing portfolio strategy by providing input into required reporting forums and collaborating with functional or business stakeholders for clear deliverables.
•Generate accurate point-in-time reports using golden source tools such as General Ledger and PPM systems for all stakeholders.
Requirements
•Proven track record managing complex projects within financial institutions, delivering outcomes on time and within budget while adhering to minimum quality standards defined by policy.
•Deep expertise in budgeting—accurately forecasting costs (capital vs expense), maintaining tight control over expenditure, and budget change control at individual project level.
•Expertise in agreeing investment project allocations across stakeholders—ensuring costs are factored into departmental business plans and resources are attested for timely delivery.
•Subject matter expertise in project management—handling multiple unrelated projects simultaneously while resolving delays or conflicts through effective change risk mitigation.
•Experience designing and delivering programme governance—regularly maintaining committee terms of reference, minute taking/management, reviewing/challenging RAID logs at both project/portfolio levels.
•Strong document management skills—structuring artefacts consistently for ease of reference by second/third line defence or Central PMO; ensuring clean closure of programmes/projects with risk acceptance or resolution.
•Comprehensive understanding of banking regulations (preferred) alongside knowledge of financial products/front-to-back processes; proven ability negotiating contracts with vendors/consultants.
•Coaching/mentoring abilities coupled with leadership skills; adept at building relationships across diverse skill sets within large organisations.
•Expertise delivering through full project lifecycle (SDLC/PDLC) using both waterfall/agile approaches; excellent communication skills adaptable across all levels.
•Advanced proficiency in Microsoft Project/Microsoft Office suite plus other project management tools; strong numerical skills underpinning attention to detail.
